Tattoo Frequently Asked Questions

What to Consider When Choosing a First Tattoo?

It’s a good idea to have planned what you want and where you want it. Do some research. Especially if you are having our artists draw a custom design. Be sure of what you want before you approach the artist to draw your custom piece.

Think about what your budget is, and what size you want the tattoo. Have you chosen your artist and do you feel comfortable talking to your artist and do they listen to you? Once you’re ready get in contact with the artist whose style reflects what you’re looking for (we’ll also always help advise on this).

Read our ultimate guide to getting tattooed for the first time.

If you’re sick it’s best to reschedule. Your tolerance to pain and stress will be low, and your artist probably does not want to catch anything. Whilst we understand illness cannot be planned, a cancellation on the day of your appointment will mean that you forfeit your deposit, and will need to pay another before a new appointment can be made.

If you are pregnant, you will need to schedule for after the baby is born. A tattoo can be too stressful on the body for a pregnant mother.

As the old adage goes “good tattoos ain’t cheap, and cheap tattooes ain’t good”. That being said, all of our tattoo artists’ rates are in-line with or even lower than our local friends in the industry. The price of your tattoo will depend upon size and complexity (which essentially dictate how long the piece will take to complete). Your artist will be able to advise their hourly rate and give a price estimate for your tattoo.

Yes, as long as you go to a reputable tattoo artist that is following all of the recommended safety precautions.

Make sure that you’re completely honest with your tattoo artist regarding any medical conditions you may have, or if you are prone to fainting.

We always recommend getting a good night’s sleep, having a full meal and some sugar before getting a tattoo to alleviate dizziness, nausea, and to increase your pain tolerance. We’d also suggest bringing sweet snacks with you for longer bookings to keep your sugar topped up (especially if you bring enough to share with your artist – we love a little treat!) Getting a tattoo with a low blood sugar level is not ideal.

The time your tattoo takes will vary depending on size, placement and detail. Your artist should be able to give you an idea of how long the piece will take at the time of booking. Please be aware though that we can only give an estimate on the time a tattoo will take, as each design is custom.

The truth is that getting any tattoo hurts to some degree.

Some areas hurt more than others, and it’s different for each client depending upon where they are more sensitive. Then there is the style of tattoo and coverage to consider too – a minimalist linework tattoo is going to feel much easier than a deeply saturated colour or black and grey piece (and we’re not even gonna mention white highlights!)

Hygiene should be the top priority when choosing a tattoo studio. We adhere to very strict cleanliness standards to prevent infections and diseases.

Northern 92 use disposable equipment, including needles, gloves, and ink cups, and constantly maintain a clean working environment.

All of our artists follow proper sterilisation procedures for their equipment and the studio has all the necessary certifications from health authorities.

Whilst you can obviously get a tattoo at any time of the year, it’s also fair to say that your skin gets a lot more abuse during the summer with swimming, tanning, and just being exposed to the elements a lot more (plus, getting tattooed in the summer means you have a fortnight of not being allowed to swim, go in a hot tub, go to the beach, or sunbathe).

Therefore we’d suggest that Winter time is really the best season to get a tattoo.

If the studio is reputable, then usually not.

Our artists will always advise if a certain type of tattoo won’t sit well on a certain area of the body for example.

We also will never tattoo anyone who is under the age of 18, whether they bring their parents with them or not!

We will also not tattoo anything racist or otherwise offensive.

There may also be certain tattoos or placements that we just don’t feel comfortable doing. In such instances we will always be completely transparent with you, and offer our professional advice, and if necessary even point you towards other local studios who may be willing to accommodate you.

We have an excellent tattoo aftercare page that covers this in great detail, and even has links to recommended creams to help your new tattoo heal. Click for tattoo aftercare advice.

Tattoos generally remain on the body indefinitely, unless removed. That being said, sadly they won’t always look as fresh as the day you had them done. You can slow the aging of tattoos by protecting the skin from the sun (or even better keeping it out of the sun completely), and exfoliating and moisturising the skin over the tattoo.

The great news as well is that our artists are also experts in reworking old tattoos, so your tattoo only ever has to look as old as you want it to!

The short answer is yes. However we would need to see the scar(s) first. Simply because we need to understand how well the scar has healed, to ensure it is ready and able to accept ink, but also to help us putting together a design that fits with the shape and flow of the body part in question, whilst also covering the aforementioned scar(s).
