At Northern 92, we’ve heard it all when it comes to tattoo myths. As Burnley’s premier tattoo studio, we believe in educating our clients and the community about the realities of tattooing. Let’s dive into some common misconceptions and set the record straight!
Myth 1: Tattoos are only for rebels or criminals
FACT: Tattoos are a form of self-expression for people from all walks of life.
Gone are the days when tattoos were associated solely with counterculture. Today, we at Northern 92 tattoo everyone from teachers and doctors to grandparents and CEOs. Tattoos are about personal meaning and art, not rebellion or criminality.
Myth 2: Getting a tattoo is unbearably painful
FACT: Pain levels vary greatly depending on the individual and the tattoo location.
While it’s true that getting a tattoo involves some discomfort, many of our clients at Northern 92 describe it as more of a mild annoyance than unbearable pain. Some even find the process meditative! Pain tolerance varies, and we’re always here to ensure you’re as comfortable as possible.
Myth 3: You can’t donate blood if you have a tattoo
FACT: In the UK, you can donate blood if your tattoo is more than 4 months old.
As long as your tattoo was done in a licensed shop like Northern 92 and it’s fully healed (which takes about 4 months), you’re good to donate. We always encourage our clients to contribute to this vital cause!
Myth 4: Tattoo ink causes cancer
FACT: There’s no conclusive evidence linking properly applied tattoo ink to cancer.
At Northern 92, we use only the highest quality, safety-tested inks. While it’s always wise to be cautious about what goes into your body, current research doesn’t support a link between tattoo ink and cancer.
Myth 5: You can’t get an MRI if you have tattoos
FACT: In most cases, tattoos don’t interfere with MRIs.
While there have been rare cases of tattoo pigments interfering with MRI results, this is extremely uncommon. Always inform your healthcare provider about your tattoos, but don’t let this myth stop you from getting necessary medical care.
Myth 6: Tattoos fade quickly and look bad as you age
FACT: With proper care, tattoos can look great for decades.
While it’s true that tattoos can fade over time, proper aftercare and sun protection can keep your ink looking fresh for years. At Northern 92, we provide detailed aftercare instructions and touch-up services to ensure your tattoo ages beautifully.
Myth 7: You can’t get a job if you have visible tattoos
FACT: Many workplaces are becoming more accepting of visible tattoos.
While some conservative professions may still frown upon visible tattoos, societal attitudes are changing rapidly. Many of our clients at Northern 92 have successful careers in various fields, visible tattoos and all!
Myth 8: Tattoo removal is quick and easy
FACT: Tattoo removal is a process that requires multiple sessions and may not be 100% effective.
While tattoo removal techniques have improved, it’s still a lengthy and potentially expensive process. That’s why we at Northern 92 always encourage our clients to think carefully about their tattoo choices.
Myth 9: You can’t get a tattoo if you have dark skin
FACT: Skilled artists can create beautiful tattoos on all skin tones.
At Northern 92, we pride ourselves on our ability to work with all skin types. While certain colours may show up differently on darker skin, a skilled artist can adjust their technique and colour choices to create stunning tattoos on any skin tone.
Myth 10: Tattoos are addictive
FACT: While many people choose to get multiple tattoos, it’s not due to a physical addiction.
There’s no chemical in tattoo ink that creates addiction. However, many people find the experience of getting tattooed empowering and enjoyable, leading them to want more. We at Northern 92 prefer to call it “passion” rather than “addiction”!
Myth 11: You can’t swim or tan after getting a tattoo
FACT: You can swim and tan after your tattoo is fully healed, but caution is advised.
We recommend avoiding swimming and tanning for 2-4 weeks after getting a tattoo to allow for proper healing. After that, you can enjoy these activities, but remember that excessive sun exposure can fade your tattoo over time.
Myth 12: Tattoos stretch significantly during pregnancy
FACT: While skin does stretch during pregnancy, most tattoos return to normal afterwards.
Many of our clients at Northern 92 worry about how pregnancy might affect their tattoos. While there may be some stretching, particularly with abdominal tattoos, most return to their original appearance post-pregnancy. Touch-ups are always an option if needed.
Myth 13: Getting a tattoo is a spur-of-the-moment decision
FACT: Most people think carefully about their tattoos before getting inked.
At Northern 92, we encourage our clients to think deeply about their tattoo choices. While we can accommodate some walk-ins, most of our clients have put significant thought into their designs.
Myth 14: Tattoo artists don’t care about your comfort or concerns
FACT: Reputable tattoo artists prioritise client comfort and communication.
At Northern 92, your comfort is our top priority. We’re always happy to answer questions, address concerns, and make adjustments to ensure you have the best possible experience.
Myth 15: All tattoo shops are the same
FACT: There can be significant differences in quality, hygiene, and customer service between tattoo shops.
At Northern 92, we pride ourselves on our sterile environment, professional staff, and commitment to customer satisfaction. We invite you to visit our studio and see the difference for yourself!
